Once a distinct community from Sioux Falls, East Sioux Falls was a city located in southeastern Minnehaha County, located about 6 miles east of Sioux Falls along South Dakota Highway 42. The History of East Sioux Falls
During the 1880s, this community saw much activity in the quarrying of jasper (also known as quartzite). This activity turned into a successful business in Sioux Falls, and out of this abundant quarrying activity — and the extension of the Illinois Central Railroad through the area — grew the community of East Sioux Falls. Today, remnants of historic buildings still linger amidst more modern architecture.

Though much of East Sioux Falls is quiet residential and suburban land, there’s still plenty to do in this part of the city! Shopping and dining is scattered throughout town, and the Dawley Farm Village offers a large retail venue offer big-box shops, restaurants, grocery, and a movie theater. For even more entertainment options, Downtown Sioux Falls is located just minutes away in Central Sioux Falls. Falls Park is one of the main parks in Sioux Falls, and residents of East Sioux Falls enjoy easy access! Here you’ll find miles of biking and walking trails, historic displays, an observation tower, sculptures, even a restaurant and visitors’ center! Also nearby are Pasley Park and Harmodon Park, which offer picnic and playground areas, walking and biking trails, and ball fields.
